Filling In The Gaps – CELJ’s Senior Legal Advice Helpline Addresses Community’s Unique Needs

Have you ever heard a loved one say that they feel like they need an attorney to get through all of the forms involved in Medicare applications?  That they have a question about a reverse mortgage, but don’t want to get charged $200 an hour for a simple answer?  Or that they can’t get the legal help they need because they’re too far away from a lawyer’s office with no transportation options available?  If any of these sound familiar, then our no-fee legal advice helpline may be the answer.

Being a senior citizen means experiencing new and unfamiliar legal issues at the same time that you may have suddenly limited income and a decreased ability to travel on your own.  Seniors often are dealing with Medicare applications, retirement benefits issues, or eligibility questions for senior housing for the first time in their lives.  For many seniors, the first experience they have with poverty is when they retire or become unable to work because of limited savings and Social Security benefits.  Further, medical conditions and aging can mean that seniors are unable to drive long distances or travel independently at all.  These three issues together can create a perfect storm for seniors at a time when they should be looking forward to enjoying retirement and spoiling their grandchildren.  At the Center for Elder Law and Justice, we address these unique needs by offering brief legal services via telephone, free of charge, for seniors in rural areas with limited means.


Our Senior Legal Advice Helpline offers answers to legal questions on a wide variety of topics of interest to seniors, including healthcare, consumer credit issues, housing, wills and more.  Callers to the Helpline speak to an attorney immediately who assesses their needs, gives legal advice, and gives referrals to in-person legal services agencies for problems that are too complex to be addressed over the phone.  Most legal questions that come to the Helpline can be addressed in 30 minutes or less by our experienced attorneys.  For those that can’t, or for those that require representation in court proceedings, Helpline attorneys provide callers with contact information for legal services agencies in their geographic area that can give the callers the help they need.  All of this information is provided to the senior from the comfort of his or her own home, in one simple phone call.

Our Helpline is open from 9:00 to 11:00am Monday through Friday, and serves seniors aged 60 and over living in Livingston, Monroe, Steuben and Allegany Counties.  We can be reached by calling toll-free 1-844-481-0973.
