CELJ Attorneys Lindsay Heckler & Kelly Barrett Testify Before NYS Assembly Committees

On Tuesday, February 27th, Center for Elder Law & Justice attorneys Lindsay Heckler and Kelly Barrett submitted testimony to the New York State Assembly Committees on Health, Labor, Aging and the Task Force on People with Disabilities. The committees had convened to address Home Health Work Force issues. Ms. Heckler presented the testimony, sharing experiences of people in our community who have been affected by a shortage of home health care aides. The testimony stated, “If NYS wants to honor the Supreme Court Olmstead decision that established the right of an individual to live in the least restrictive setting possible, NY needs to act now to increase the home care workforce. Too many people are in nursing homes who do not need to be there, and too many in the community are at risk of harm due to lack of home care workers. Increasing the numbers of home care workers so that more people can be cared for in the community is not only the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do.” Read the full testimony here.
